Briefs: Hospice offers support groups

Support groups to help adult community members mourn and reflect are being offered through the holidays hosted by Sutter North Hospice.

Topics will include how to best support those in mourning, coping with grief during the holidays and tips for handling the holidays.

There is no fee to attend the drop-in groups.

Grieving Through the Holiday series support groups are meeting through Jan. 8 at various times:

At 400 Plumas Blvd., Suite 115, Yuba City — Tuesdays at 10 a.m. for adults; Tuesdays at 3:30 p.m. for the young widow; and Thursdays at 5 p.m. for adults.

At 16911 Willow Glen Road in Brownsville — Thursdays at 2 p.m. for adults.

No meetings will be held on Thanksgiving, Christmas Day or New Year's Day.

Marysville

Arts council hosts film screening

Two back-to-back screenings of "The Selling," a comedic take on the horror genre produced by a Yuba-Sutter native, are set Oct. 19 at the Lee Burrows Center for the Arts, 630 E St. in Marysville.

The showings are at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m., with a reception following the second screening including the stars, producers, director and writer of the film.

Tickets are $10 per person. The first 15 people arriving at each screening will receive a book of Edgar Allan Poe's stories.

Advance tickets can be purchased in Marysville at the Yuba-Sutter Regional Arts Council, 624 E St., and Gallery34, 419 D St., and online at yubasutterarts.org/ theselling.

Proceeds benefit the arts council.

The film was produced and directed by Yuba-Sutter native Emily Lou, the former Emily Wilbur.

Gleaners sets food giveaways

The monthly food giveaways coordinated by the Yuba-Sutter Gleaners Food Bank are scheduled for October.

Gridley

Teen killed in gang shooting

A Gridley teenager died Tuesday, a victim of an apparent gang-related shooting earlier this week, police said.

Alonzo Robles-Morales died at Enloe Medical Center, less than a day after he was shot in the head, according to the Gridley-Biggs Police Department.

No arrests have been made, Chief Gary Keeler said Wednesday.

"We're working on some leads, but there's not a lot I can tell you right now," Keeler said.

The 18-year-old Butte County resident was shot around 7 p.m. Monday near Cedar and Indiana streets, Keeler said.

Police believe Robles-Morales was shot once in the head with a .22-caliber firearm.

Investigators have confirmed a gang motive for the shooting, but said they have not been getting a lot of cooperation from people they've interviewed.

Marysville

Jailed 2 years later in gun shooting

A Marysville man who dodged an arrest nearly two years ago after allegedly firing a gun outside a Yuba City bar and running from police was arrested Tuesday.

Jesse Len Ingram was arrested in Marysville and transferred to the Sutter County Jail on suspicion of assault with a firearm and evading police, Lt. Tom Tappe said.

Ingram, 26, was accused of brandishing a pistol during an argument at Plumas Street bar on Nov. 3, 2010, and firing several rounds in the air before fleeing in a car.

Police said Ingram ditched his vehicle after a brief chase and disappeared on foot.

On Tuesday, Marysville police were called around 5 p.m. Tuesday to the Sierra Central Credit Union in the 400 block of Fourth Street to investigate a suspicious person, Sgt. Chris Sachs said. Officers contacted Ingram and learned of the warrant after running his name through dispatchers.

Salmon starts Peoples' Day

If you're planning to make a trip up to Sycamore Ranch Park for Indigenous Peoples' Days this weekend, you can get an early start with the salmon ceremony at 7 a.m. Saturday.

The ceremony, a traditional one for the Tsi-Akim Maidu Tribe, is meant to display the strong connection between native people and salmon. After a sunrise ceremony at the banks of the Yuba River in Sycamore Ranch, two tribal members will hunt additional fish for a feast later in the day.

Indigenous' Peoples Days, in its second year at Sycamore Ranch, will have other events on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, including dances and story circles. The event is free. Sycamore Ranch is at 5390 Highway 20, Browns Valley.
