Yuba-Sutter on fire
Comments 0 | Recommend 0Four blazes in an hour
Yuba-Sutter firefighters were busy Thursday afternoon with four fires — including two structures — within one hour.
In Olivehurst, a fire destroyed an unoccupied house in the 2300 block of McGowan Parkway around 3 p.m.
McGowan was blocked off by Olivehurst Fire Department, Wheatland Fire Department and law enforcement crews that responded.
Olivehurst Fire Chief Stephen Hart said the structure was a complete loss. The cause of the fire is unknown, he said.
The house, a wooden, single-story structure, was charred black and flames were visible inside. Crews used chainsaws and axes to open the home and extinguish the flames.
Chaplain Norman Highley said he had an idea who owned the home, but had not heard or seen him in a few days.
Highley, though, said he would recommend code enforcement come out to the residence because of the amount of debris piled in the yard.
"It's quite a mess," he said standing near the piles. "But it's not visible from the freeway."
During this fire, crews were also dispatched to a brush fire off Arboga Road.
Meanwhile, Yuba City firefighters responded to a pair of blazes a block apart on Tierra Buena Road.
A barn at a peach farm in the 3100 block, north of Pease Road, burned to the ground at about 2 p.m., according to Division Chief Pete Daley.
While some firefighters sprayed down that fire's remains, others battled a northerly wind and 107-degree heat to knock down flames that broke out on the opposite side of Tierra Buena Road.
One firefighter was treated at the scene for apparent heat exhaustion, but no other injuries were reported from the two fires.
