"Share the Magic" is the theme of this year's Tehama District Fair, which opens Thursday and runs through Sunday.

Catching some of that magic is the hope of six young women who are vying for the 2012 Miss Tehama County crown during Thursday night's pageant.

The event starts at 7 p.m. at the Tehama District Fair's midway stage.

"This is more than a pageant," pageant organizer Sonja Akers said. "It is a scholarship pageant which provides $3,000 in scholarships to the participants."

Two of the contestants, 18-year-old Tina Acosta and Krista Mae Lucier, 19, are Corning residents and Corning High School graduates.

The others are from Red Bluff: Lacie James, 18, Hannah Lane Miller, Kayla McCoshum and Monica Day, all 16.

Contestants are judged in several categories: academic achievement, community service, extemporaneous speaking, talent, community service advocacy, written essay, participation in the fair industry and interviews.

One young man, Ernesto Miles Leyva, 17, of Dairyville, has entered the Tehama County Ambassador contest, which will also be held Thursday.

Megan Mandolfo, who won the title of 2011 Miss Tehama County and went on to be crowned 2012 Golden Gate Youth Ambassadress, will be one hand to crown the new royalty.

The pageant will be held two hours after the fair's grand opening ceremony, which takes place at the Tehama District Fairgrounds front entrance at 5 p.m., with the gates opening at 2 p.m. and closing at 11 p.m.

Along with the local pageant contestants, there will be many more Corning area folks participating in the fair, including FFA and 4-H members showing and selling animals, rodeo contestants, art, craft, flower, and other exhibitors — and those brave enough to enter the corndog eating contest.

Bob Safford, agriculture teacher and FFA advisor at Corning High, said the club has 14 members showing steers, 22 members raised hogs, and three are bringing lambs to sell at Saturday's Tehama Junior Livestock Auction, which starts at 10 a.m. in the Don Smith Pavilion.

"We have a really good group from the high school showing their animals and selling them Saturday at the Tehama Junior Livestock Auction," Safford stated. "I expect we should do really well."

Another local attraction at the fair is the Turrii Farms Steak Dinner from 6-8 p.m. in the fairground's Hospitality Tent. Tony and Marianne Turri run an Angus cattle ranch in Flournoy and are becoming famous for their grass-fed, hormone-free beef.

For the locals attending the fair, there are many attractions to look forward to, such as the Diaper Derby, Super Science Puzzlemania, carnival rides, live Safari Lion/Wolf Exhibit and Show, Tehama Trail Marketplace and Nor Cal Championship Destruction Derby, to name just a few.

On Friday, the fair will host the action-packed Outlaw Kart Racing, and on Saturday the Pacific Tractor Pullers Association Tractor Pull plus 4x4 Stock Truck Competition is scheduled.

Each night there will be a street dance in the fairgrounds midway, featuring such performers as Inside Strait, Chad Bushnell, and three performers for Sunday's Fiesta Latina.
