Boy Scouts offer Christmas tree recycling

Troops plan pick ups Saturday and Jan. 5

Christmas trees can be recycled in the Yuba-Sutter area after the holidays, helping the local Boy Scouts while saving the environment.

Callers can request to have their Christmas trees picked up this Saturday or Jan. 5, with more than 15 local Scout troops participating in the annual project.

The program is sponsored by Yuba-Sutter Disposal Inc.

A $10 donation is requested. Money raised goes toward expenses for the Scouts summer camp and the National Jamboree.

The local scouts are under the direction of the Buttes Area District Boy Scouts of American, part of the Golden Empire Council.

In addition to fundraising, “one of the big goals of this operation is keeping the trees out of the landfill,” said Tim Sanders, parent and project coordinator.

All ornaments, tinsel, nails and tree stands must be removed before placing the trees at curbside to be picked up by the scouts.

Flocked trees must be hosed off.

To schedule a tree pick-up by the Boy Scouts, call Sanders at 751-7883. Trees must be at the curb by 8 a.m. on the collection day.

Trees can also be picked up by YSDI on the residence’s regular refuse collection day. The trees must have all lights, tinsel and decorations removed. They must be cut into 3-foot sections and placed in the green curbside container.

Because flocked trees cannot be recycled, pick-up includes a special fee of $5. Call 749-4220 for more information.
