Male shot on C Street in Yuba City
An unidentified male was shot Sunday afternoon just north of the fairgrounds in Yuba City.
The victim was shot once at about 5 p.m. near the intersection of B and C streets, said police Sgt. Brian Baker.
"It was like, 'pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop,'" said Brittney Sarver, 27, who lives across the street from the shooting scene.
Sarver said she heard five or six shots before a vehicle zoomed away, its tires squealing.
Police did not know who the victim was, how many shots were fired, where he was shot on his body, the victim's condition, or if the shooting was gang-related, said Baker.
Moreover, police had no suspects, and witnesses gave conflicting descriptions of a vehicle that left the scene.
"We're still trying to figure all that out," the Yuba City police sergeant said.
Sarver, too, was unsure what was going on when she first heard the popping noises.
"Right as I got to the window, I heard squealing tires," she said. "If there's loud pops and a truck, I've watched enough (of the TV show) 'Gangland' to know that's probably not firecrackers."
She then called police and her boyfriend, Rocky Macchiarella, 29, who was out running Roxie, the couple's dog. After getting the call, Macchiarella sprinted back to the house and got a look at the crime scene.
"You could see the dude laying down with a body bag over him," Macchiarella said, explaining it looked like emergency crews had placed a tarp over the victim to shield his body from view as they worked on him.
Sarver and Macchiarella moved to the neighborhood four months ago. The shooting came out of nowhere, Sarver said. Normally, the neighborhood is quiet, so quiet that a car accident the night before surprised her.
Then the shooting.
"It was just really — I was really shaking," Sarver said. "It's close to home, really close to home, like see-from-my-porch close to home."
