Yuba City recycling center fire doused; no injuries

A fire sparked Friday at a Yuba City recycling center, burning large amounts of plastic, cardboard and newspaper and charring an open metal building.

No injuries were reported.

Firefighters responded at about 11:30 a.m. to the smoky blaze at Recycling Industries in the 100 block of Epley Drive, just south of Garden Highway.

"Because of the north wind and the high fire danger with the red flag warning, there was concern that embers were flying off about half a block into a field, and we needed to prevent a possible wildfire from starting in the field over there," said battalion fire Chief John Limas.

Firefighters from Marysville and Linda were called to help prevent flames from spreading.

There was no word Friday afternoon on the possible cause of the blaze, and damage estimates were being calculated.
