Skeletal remains found in Buttes

Human skeletal remains were discovered on Tuesday afternoon near a dirt road close to the summit of the Sutter Buttes, the Sutter County Sheriff's Department reported.

"We don't know if they're male or female, or how long they've been there," Capt. Lewis McElfresh said, adding the cause of death is under investigation.

Construction workers made the discovery around 12:15 p.m. at a makeshift campsite by an unnamed access road near Pass Road in Sutter County, authorities said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the department at 822-7307.

Yuba County

Security guard raise rejected

Alhough they haven't received a cost-of-living raise in two years, Elite Security guards contracted with Yuba County won't be seeing one in the near future.

The firm requested an adjustment or a raise of 40 cents per hour, but there wasn't enough support among the Yuba County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday. While supervisors Hal Stocker and Mary Jane Griego supported the raise, supervisors Andy Vasquez and Roger Abe opposed it. Vasquez pointed out approving a raise wasn't in the county's fiscal budget for 2012-13, adding the firm's contract didn't call for such raises.

A motion to approve the raise died on a 2-2 vote, with Supervisor John Nicoletti absent.
