Briefs: Italian Dinner set Feb. 22

The 18th annual Italian Dinner fundraiser, benefiting the Yuba-Sutter Legal Center for Seniors, is planned Feb. 22 at the Veterans Memorial Building, 1425 Memorial Circle, Yuba City.

Dinner, prepared by volunteers from Recology Yuba-Sutter, is at 7 p.m.

The event includes a no-host wine and beer bar starting at 6:30 p.m., a raffle and a silent cake auction featuring cakes donated by local businesses.

Tickets are $15 each or $80 for a table of six.

Driving class for teens, parents

Start Smart, a safe driving course for teenagers and their parents, is planned at 6:30 p.m. March 6 at the Yuba-Sutter California Highway Patrol office, 1619 Poole Blvd., Yuba City.

The program, intended for ages 15 to 20, teaches about the dangers of driving.

It also includes testimony from a person directly affected by a tragic collision.

Youth Build seeks donations

Donations are being accepted for a yard sale hosted by the Yuba County Office of Education's Youth Build program.

Set from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. March 2 at the Youth Build parking lot at 1104 E St. in Marysville, the sale will raise money for students to travel to New York and help with rebuilding in communities affected by Hurricane Sandy.

The local Youth Build program plans to partner with the Youth Action Program in Harlem.

Garamendi is guest speaker

Congressman John Garamendi is a featured speaker at the St. Patrick's Day fundraiser sponsored by the Feather River Democratic Club.

Kate Scott, California deputy director, Region 2 of the Barack Obama campaign, is also a guest speaker.

Planned at 5 p.m. March 16 at the Plaza Room in Hillcrest Plaza in Yuba City, the event includes a no-host wine and beer bar followed by a traditional corned beef and cabbage dinner.

Library hosts Spring Book Sale

A wide selection of books, from novels to children's to cookbooks, are part of the Spring Book Sale in March hosted by the Friends of the Sutter County Library.

All proceeds raised support activities at the library in Yuba City.

Set from March 8-16, the sale's hours are 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday to Thursday; 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday and Saturday; and noon-5 p.m. Sunday.

The library is at 750 Forbes Ave.

Marysville

YC man jailed in police chase

Marysville police arrested a Yuba City man near Seventh and G streets on Wednesday after he attempted to flee from a stolen car.

John Kelley, 28, was driving a stolen 1997 Mazda when police attempted to stop him, according to the Marysville Police Department. Kelley slowed the car to let a male passenger out, then continued another block before ditching the car and running away.

After a block, Kelley was arrested by police, but the passenger got away, said Sgt. Chris Sachs.

Police discovered that the car was a stolen vehicle from the 900 block of Bridge Street in Yuba City.

Kelley was arrested on possession of stolen property and booked into Yuba County Jail.

Injured judge still recovering

Judge Debra L. Givens, the presiding Yuba County Superior Court judge, continues recovering at home, nearly two months after breaking her back in a vehicle collision in Yuba City.

There is still no time frame for Givens to return to the bench, according to Steve Konishi, the court's chief executive officer.

Judge James F. Dawson, who retired in December, has agreed to fill in for Givens indefinitely, Konishi said.

Givens, 47, was injured Dec. 11 when her vehicle was struck by another car whose driver was speeding, the Yuba City Police Department said.

Neither drugs nor alcohol were factors.

The driver, 23-year-old Mercedes Brockman, also suffered minor injuries and was treated and released from the hospital.

No criminal charges are expected.

Sutter County

Tickets available for peace officer awards

Tickets are available for the 36th annual Yuba-Sutter Peace Officer of the Year Awards Banquet hosted by the Marysville Exchange Club.

The event is set Feb. 16, with a social hour at 5:30 p.m. and dinner and awards at 6:30 p.m., at the Yuba-Sutter Fairgrounds, Franklin Hall, in Yuba City.

Tickets are $30 and can be purchased at any law enforcement office.
