Briefs: No Yuba County jail inmates freed due to fed budget cuts
The federal budget cuts taking effect last week did not result in Yuba County releasing any inmates being held under a contract with federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement, according to Sheriff Steve Durfor.
Rather, the cuts have resulted in slightly fewer such transfers coming from ICE, which pays the county to hold them in the jail until their court case, or status, is resolved.
Yuba County charges $71.58 per detainee, per day, under the contract with ICE.
In 2010, the county received $6.35 million from ICE under the contract.
ICE officials elsewhere have authorized releasing such prisoners, often to outcry from those living nearby.
Durfor said no such releases have happened from the Yuba County Jail.

2 fundraisers benefit band
Two fundraisers are planned to help a Yuba City band following the theft of its tour van on Jan. 17, with thousands of dollars worth of musical gear inside.
The indie rock band Brolly had just performed in San Francisco and had a show the next day in Fresno. The bandmates were staying at a friend's home in Oakland and had parked Brolly's Chevrolet van along a frontage road for Interstate 580.
The next day, the van was gone, along with about $20,000 in equipment.
On Saturday from noon-5 p.m., a benefit car wash is at The Cave Live, at 200 Bridge St. in Yuba City. A benefit show is planned at the same location at 7 p.m. March 15. Admission is $10 and the show is open to all ages.
Brolly has raised $3,000 in donations.

YUBA COUNTY
Youth spelling bees are Wednesday
Yuba County students in grades fourth to ninth are competing in the annual Yuba County Elementary and Intermediate Schools Spelling Bees.
The event starts at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Yuba County Career Preparatory Charter School, Feather River Room, 1104 E St., Marysville.
Competitors include eight students in fourth- to sixth-grades and 10 students in seventh- to ninth-grades. The first and second place winners in both contests will represent the county at the California State Spelling Bee Championships May 11 in San Rafael.
Five members of the Sutter-Yuba Association of Realtors are serving as judges/proctors.
