Briefs: Railroad work to divert traffic in Wheatland
Traffic will be affected in Wheatland during the next two weeks as work gets under way to upgrade Union Pacific Railroad crossings.
Crossings must be closed to vehicles and pedestrians while grade crossing surfaces are fixed.
Crossings at Main and Third streets will be closed the first week, Monday to Friday, and at Second and Fourth streets during the second week, March 25-29.
MARYSVILLE
Whittier school talk set at library
History of the Whittier State School for Boys is featured in the next Table Talks series at the Yuba County Library in Marysville.
Set at 3 p.m. March 23 in the Community Room, the program is being presented by Christopher Garmire, audio/visual records archivist at the California State Archives. Admission is free.
The Legislature authorized the establishment of a reform school for juvenile offenders in Marysville in 1860, but the site was not finished because of a lack of funds.
YUBA CITY
Help sought with care packages
The Tri Counties Blue Star Moms are hosting its annual care package event on March 23, with the public invited to help pack and ship packages to troops before having a spaghetti dinner.
The event is at the National Guard Armory at 310 B St. in Yuba City.
Donations of snack and hygiene will be accepted from 1 p.m.-4 p.m.; packaging is at 4 p.m.
Tickets for the dinner, at 6 p.m., are $15 per person. Tickets will be sold at the door. For more information, call 682-3487.
SUTTER COUNTY
Hearing planned on Block Grant
A hearing is set to collect comments on local needs and setting priorities for the Sutter County 2014-15 Community Service Block Grant Community Action Plan.
The hearing is at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Yuba City City Council chambers, 1201 Civic Center Blvd.
The grant's goal is to enable low-income residents to become self-sufficient.
Speakers will have five minutes to give their testimony. For an appointment, call 749-5460.
