MId-Valley briefs from Wednesday's paper.

Olivehurst

Son allegedly abused mother

An Olivehurst man was arrested after allegedly abusing his 82-year-old mother physically and financially, a Yuba County Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman said Tuesday.

George Wayne Kilgo, 47, is also suspected of threatening the mother by phone from Yuba County Jail after being arrested Monday. Yuba County Judge James Curry increased Kilgo’s bail to $100,000 because of the threats, according to jail records.

Investigators found bruises on the mother. Kilgo controlled her finances and did not allow her access to her money, said spokeswoman Melanie Oakes.

Kilgo, who was acting as his mother’s caregiver at their home in the 4300 block of Elton Avenue, is also facing a charge of false imprisonment because he “restricted her movements,” said Oakes.

Neighbors reported the abuse, she said.

East Linda

Crude bomb lands man in jail

A 34-year-old East Linda man was being held Tuesday in Yuba County Jail on $500,000 bail after a plastic bag containing firecrackers and BBs allegedly was found in his pocket.

Jahmal Derrick Stewart, 34, of the 1900 block of Fernwood Drive, was arrested on suspicion of possessing a destructive device in a public place.

A relative who lives at the address called the Sheriff’s Department about 8 a.m. Sunday to report having had an argument with Stewart, who left the home on foot. When stopped a short time later at Woodland and Fernwood drives, Stewart refused to remove his hands from his pockets, said department spokesman Melanie Oakes.

The deputy patted down Stewart and found the white plastic bag, which contained “several” firecrackers and BBs. The homemade device was “pretty crude” but possibly dangerous, said Oakes.

Stewart is also facing a charge of resisting arrest.

Yuba City

Man hospitalized after beating

A 20-year-old man was brought to Rideout Memorial Hospital with “very severe” injuries from a beating, including a fractured skull, collapsed lung and dislocated shoulder, a Sutter County Sheriff’s Department said Tuesday.

Friends of Ryan L. Uutela found him at his home on Pamela Court in southwest Yuba City and brought him to the hospital, which reported the beating to the Sheriff’s Department at 10:24 p.m. Monday, said Undersheriff J. Paul Parker.

Uutela was transferred to Sutter Roseville Medical Center, where he was reported Tuesday in fair condition.

Investigators arrested a suspect Tuesday, said Parker. The suspect’s name was not immediately available. The motive for the beating was not known.
