Poker tourney to benefit veterans

A fundraiser is slated for the Central Valley Homeless Veterans Assistance Program at 2 p.m. Saturday at Casino Marysville, 515 Fourth St., Marysville.

The Yuba-Sutter United Way, with the casino, is sponsoring a charity Texas Hold 'Em Poker Tournament.

There is a $110 buy-in that includes food. A raffle will be held during the event for additional prizes.

Marysville

Volunteers can work for police

The Marysville Police Department is accepting applications for its volunteer program, part of the department's Community Oriented Policing Services, or COPS.

In addition, the Police Department is inviting residents of neighborhoods in the city to organize a new or refresh current Neighborhood Watch Programs to help fight crime.

Applicants for the COPS volunteer program must be 20 years or older, pass a background investigation, and commit to at least 16 hours a month to volunteering.

Training is provided through a 40-hour academy and on the job.

The COPS volunteers help with various duties, freeing up police officers to focus on 911 calls and other high-priority situations.

Yuba County

Drivers needed for vets' trips

Volunteer drivers are needed to transport veterans to medical appointments at Mather and McClellan VA medical centers through the Yuba County Veterans Office, 1114 Yuba St., Marysville.

The Veterans Office produces the schedule.

Those applying must have a valid driver's license, proof of current auto insurance, a fingerprint and background check, and a physical. There is no cost to the volunteer.

Volunteers do not have to be military veterans.

Middle Mountain calendars for '09

The Middle Mountain Foundation's 2009 calendar, featuring photos of the Sutter Buttes, is available for purchase.

The cost is $13, with money raised helping the foundation continue its work of preserving the Sutter Buttes and the surrounding agricultural region.

The calendar can be obtained at several business in the Mid-Valley, including in Marysville, Yuba City, Colusa and Gridley and online at www.middlemountain.org.

The Web site also includes a complete list of participating businesses.
