    Arraignment for bribery set back

Two Yuba-Sutter attorneys charged with trying to bribe a juvenile victim in a sexual assault case had their arraignment delayed Tuesday in Yuba County Superior Court.

Jesse Santana and David Vasquez, who allegedly sought to prevent the girl from talking to police and prosecutors, were indicted earlier by a Yuba County grand jury.

Visiting Judge John H. Darlington set a new arraignment date of March 24 after the defendants' attorneys said they needed more time to study an estimated 2,000 pages of grand jury documents.

The same grand jury indicted Marysville towing company manager Joseph Griesa, who is charged with assaulting the victim when she was an employee.

Santana and Vasquez are free on their own recognizance.

    Housing authority gets $56K grant

The Yuba County Housing Authority has received $55,979 to provide low-income residents with job training.

The federal grant is one of 49 totaling $5,197,292 awarded to 49 public housing agencies in the state, according to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Funded through HUD's Housing Choice Voucher Family Self-Sufficiency Program, the grants allow public housing agencies (PHAs) to work with welfare agencies, schools, businesses, and other local partners to develop a program to help individuals develop skills and experience to enable them to obtain jobs that pay a living wage.

Grants in California range from $40,000 to nearly $400,000.

Suspect in threat case evades cops

Deputies from Yuba and Nevada counties searched unsuccessfully Tuesday for a Grass Valley man who allegedly threatened his girlfriend at her home near Smartsville.

The search for James Carmen, 54, which included a California Highway Patrol helicopter, was called off about 3:30 p.m., said Yuba County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Melanie Oakes.

The woman called the Sheriff's Department at 11:30 a.m. during an argument with Carmen at the home in the 8000 block of Timbuctoo Road. When deputies arrived about 15 minutes later, Carmen had left on foot, leaving his truck.

A gun reportedly involved in the argument was found in the truck, said Oakes.
