Yuba County
Emergency road closure approved
On a 5-0 vote, Yuba County supervisors Tuesday approved an emergency road closure to fix a deteriorating culvert on Feather River Boulevard, at the Plumas Lake Canal.
County Public Works Director Mike Lee said a maintenance crew from Reclamation District 784 discovered the culvert, which was damaged by the 1997 levee break nearby and wasn't replaced then.
Lee recommended the county close the road to fix the culvert, beginning next week. The culvert is about 1,100 feet south of Rich Road.
Completing the work, expected to cost about $100,000, will take up to two weeks.
SUTTER, BUTTE
Flood control ballots mailed
The Sutter Butte Flood Control Agency has mailed out more than 34,200 ballots to property owners in Sutter and Butte counties.
Property owners are being asked whether they support an annual assessment to help pay for repairs on 44 miles of levees along the west bank of the Feather River.
Upgrading levees on the Feather's west bank is meant to keep the two counties out of federal flood-hazard zones, which would boost the cost of flood insurance and require it for any homes with federal mortgages. Increased protection also would help the area avoid possible state curbs on building permits from 2015 onward.
Construction is scheduled to run from 2012 to 2014.
Property owners can mail in ballots as long as they are received by June 30. Ballots can be hand-delivered during the agency's public hearing at 6 p.m. June 30, at the Veteran's Hall, 1425 Veteran's Memorial Circle, Yuba City.
To be counted, all ballots must be received prior to the close of the public hearing.
The assessment is supported by the Sutter County Taxpayers Association.
Property owners with questions are encouraged to call the agency hotline at 870-4425, or send an e-mail through the website www.sutterbutte flood.org.
