Morehead continues wrestling success on national level

Austin Morehead showed California he could wrestle by finishing fifth at the state championships in May.

Last month, he showed the country.

Morehead took sixth place in the Junior Greco National Championships on July 21. The finish earned the Sutter High standout All-American honors.

The Appeal-Democrat All Area selection for the top wrestler at 215 pounds, Morehead compiled stellar numbers this past season. As a junior, he went 52-3, with 42 of the victories coming via a pin. He qualified for the California Interscholastic Federation State Championships for the second straight year and went on to finish fifth.

Bronze for Gridley boy

Tanner Ramsey brought home a bronze medal to the Mid-Valley after participating as a finalist in the National Junior Olympic Skills Competition on July 24 in Chula Vista.

The 11-year-old's new neckwear comes courtesy of a strong showing in the track and field competition which took place at the U.S. Olympic Training Center. He scored a total of 593 points which complied results from the 50-meter dash and standing broad jump.

Higgins flexes to first

Yuba City's Grant Higgins captured a trio of awards at his first bodybuilding competition last weekend. The 17-year-old won the novice lightweight, novice overall and open lightweight divisions at the Governor's Cup Bodybuilding Championships.

Marysville skater shines

Wyatt Reusser had a good day at the third annual "Grind for a Grand" skateboarding competition on July 25 at Bedrock Skatepark in Oroville. The 9-year-old finished third in the nine-and-under division.

Former Husky gets national recognition

Andrew Hickey, a Sutter High graduate, was named an ESPN The Magazine Academic All American for his senior season on the University of Nevada, Reno rifle team, according to the publication.

While competing, Hickey was named a second team All-American in both small bore and air rifle. This was in addition to his work in the clas room, where he compiled a 3.96 GPA. en route to graduating with a degree in biochemistry.

Snyder stellar in classroom

Former Yuba City High basketball standout and Yuba College 49er Danielle Snyder earned a California Collegiate Athletic Association academic award. To be eligible for the award Snyder, a former AD All- Area selection in 2006 and junior on the Cal State L.A. women's basketball team, needed a grade point average of 3.40 or higher in addition to other criteria.

FRAC fares well in Roseville

The Feather River Aquatic Club swim team competed at the Sierra Nevada Long Course Junior Olympics meet on July 23-26 in Roseville.

Aaron Birch, 12, had the best day for the club. He finished first in the 100-meter backstroke (1 minute, 11.5 seconds) and set a meet record with his win in the 50 backstroke (33.01). Birch finished second in the 200 backstroke (2:37), 50 breaststroke (37.19), 100 breaststroke and 50 fly (30.81).

Birch also came in fourth in the 200 breaststroke and fifth in the 50 freestyle (28.86).

Tyler Bellenfant (15-16-year-old division) finished first in the 100 backstroke (1:04.76) and fifth place finishes in the 100 breaststroke (1:15.73) and 200 individual medley.

Sisters Shelby and Claudia Guillory led the way for the girls. Shelby (17-18) finished third in the 100 breaststroke (1:18.4), 200 breaststroke (2:52.19) and 200 IM (2:34.11). She also finished sixth in the 50 freestyle (29.12) and 100 freestyle (1:03.55).

Claudia Guillory (11-12) was fifth in the 100 breaststroke (1:28) and sixth in the 50 breaststroke (40.10) and 200 breaststroke (3:10.26.) Erica Bellenfant (13-14) was a first alternate in the 100 backstroke (1:15.29).
