Roundup: Pope has glorious outing for YC

Brandon Pope fired a complete-game two-hitter and James Haymore and Zach Walden drove in two runs each to lead the Yuba City High baseball team to a 6-2 Tri-County Conference victory over cross-town rival River Valley on Thursday.

With the win and Woodland's loss to Pioneer on Tuesday, the Honkers clinched the TCC championship following a 5-0 lead after one inning.

Pope was in charge from the start, finishing with 10 strike outs while walking two and hitting a batter.

"He pretty much dominated today," said Yuba City coach Jim Stassi. "He had command of all three of his pitches. I think it was the best outing he's thrown all year."

Max Stassi and Walden both finished the game 2-for-3 and Justin Lamb, Aaron Crouch and Hunter Graves all smacked doubles for Yuba City (24-2, 13-1).

The Honkers and Falcons (6-19, 3-11) meet in today's regular season finale at River Valley at 4:15 p.m.

YOUTH BASKETBALL

Swarm split pair

Jesse Barriga scored 24 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead the NorCal Swarm 13-and-under boys basketball team to a 67-38 win over the Colfax Falcons.

Devon Ward hit four 3-pointers en route to his 22 points for the Swarm (6-0), Cedrick Thomas had 12 points and 16 rebounds and Monta' Easter dished out eight assists.

The 14-and-under Swam lost to the Lincoln Lions, 52-39. Amrit Singh had 14 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Swarm (7-4).

Finch leads Masters

Swimmers in Austin

Three Yuba City Masters Swimmers competed in the U.S. Masters Swimming National Championships in Austin, Texas, May 1-4.

Mary Finch of District 10 placed in three events in the 50-54 age division. She was seventh in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 3 minutes, 1.54 seconds, ninth in the 50 breaststroke (38.09) and 10th in the 1,000 freestyle (13:16.01). She also competed in the 100 breaststroke, 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle.

Barbara Taylor of Yuba City placed eighth in the 200 butterfly (3:06.15) in the 50-54 age division. She also swam in the 50 butterfly, the 100 butterfly, the 100 individual medley and the 50 freestyle.

Stanley Lee of District 10 competed in the 50 breaststroke, 100 breaststroke and 200 breaststroke in the 50-54 age flight.
