49ers double their fun

Zack Vawter-Scroggins has made the Yuba College baseball team all but unbeatable when he is on the mound.

The freshman allowed one earned run in 8 2/3 innings to lead the 49ers (13-20, 8-11) to a 9-2 Bay Valley Conference victory at Solano on Saturday. Adrian Perez got the final out. It was their fourth win in five games.

"He was outstanding," Yuba coach Tim Gloyd said of his young starter, who enduced five ground ball double plays.

Ryan Williams belted a two-run double in the first and Javier Solis cleared the bases with a double in the third as Yuba jumped out to a 5-0 lead. The 49ers added four runs in the eighth.

Ed Ryan, Josh Hamel and Nic Gualdin also doubled, while Ryan DeLozier was 2-for-5. Williams also had two hits. TRACK & FIELD

Whitley sets pace

Jadyn Whitley placed second in the 3,000-meter steeple chase with a time of 14 minutes, 17.1 seconds for the 49ers at the Ed Adams Invitational at the Hardnell College in Salinas. Jill Hagey followed in fourth with a time of 14:59.4.

Sarah Tavares placed fifth in the hammer throw with a distance of 96 feet, 3 inches. Whitley Priddy placed sixth in the javalin with a throw of 80-9. Julia Grimes placed seventh in the 5,000 (24:17.51).

For the men, Gurvinder Bajwa placed fifth in the 200 with a time of 22.47 seconds. Behzad Razzada finished eighth in the 400 intermediate hurdles (1:06.72).

Four 49ers to NorCal

Daniel Henke and Shawn Aldrich qualified for the NorCal Tournament in both the men's singles and doubles, and Madeline Stephens qualified in singles and doubles with partner Joni Klever.

"I think this is the most we've ever had qualify for NorCals," 49ers coach Josh Prager said.

The quartet of 49ers qualified at the Bay Valley Conference Tournament held at Diablo Valley in Pleasant Hill.

Henke, who was seeded sixth, beat Shasta's No. 1 and American River's No. 4 to reach the quarterfinals and earn entry to NorCals.

Aldrich was seeded 10th and beat Shasta's No. 4 before losing to ARC's No. 5 netter. He earned an at-large bid after defeating ARC 's No. 4 in a single-set match, 6-1.

Henke and Aldrich played just one doubles match, beating Santa Rosa's No. 3 duo, 6-1-6-1.

Stephens went 1-1 in her two singles matches, beating the No. 3 netter from Shasta and losing to Sierra's No. 4 player. Seeded No. 9, Stephens earned an at-large berth in a vote of coaches.

Stephens and Klever beat the No. 1 team from DVC in their only match.
