Roundup: Sutter boys take Butte View League crown
Tony Perez's impressive season continued on Wednesday with a solid run that led the Sutter High boy's cross country team to a Butte View League championship.
Perez finished the three-mile course in 16 minutes, 17 seconds to take first place. Finishing just behind Perez was Wheatland standout Eric Faires in 17:13.
Bentley Nunes (sixth, 17:32), Raj Baines (seventh, 17:36) Jesus Flores (11th, 18:20) and Sean DeWoody (17th, 18:32) bolstered Perez's strong effort to give Sutter a 35-50 victory over second place Durham. Las Plumas finished third with 69 points.
Gridley's Wyatt Roberts finished fourth in 17:25 and fellow Bulldog Anthony Caratachea finished 10th in 18:03. Wheatland's Phillip Faires finished eighth in 17:43.
The Sutter girls faced a healthier dose of competition from their league rivals and finished third with 71 points behind second place Colusa with 43 points and newly-crowned BVL champion Durham with 36 points.
Alison Schmidt had the strongest run for the Huskies with her 10th-place finish in 22:19. Jaymi Hill (12th, 22:53), Brooke O'Neill (14th, 22:53), Sarah Stalins (17th, 23:44) and Jessica Ruxton (19th, 23:48) rounded out the Huskies effort.
Wheatland's Jessica Carpenter paced the field to take the top spot with 19:22, while fellow Pirate Makaya Boyd finished 21st in 23:59. Gridley's Sumanpreet Mattu finished eighth in 23:45.
Girls Tennis
Despite valiant efforts all over the Rancho Cortez tennis courts, no Yuba City High tennis players will be advancing to the Sac-Joaquin Section finals.
Megan Jaicks defeated Woodland's Megan Davis 6-3, 6-3 then defeated Diana Derquen 6-2, 3-6,10-8 before falling in the semifinals to Katie Pool 6-3, 6-2. Angela Noland defeated fellow Honker Jasdeet Kang 6-4, 6-4 but then fell 6-2, 6-2 to Gene Epperson.
