Down by two heading into the bottom of the ninth inning, the Yuba College baseball team scored three runs to come away with an 8-7 victory over the College of Marin at Gary Engleken Field on Thursday.

Jason Hamel and Ryan Williams started the inning by drawing walks and Nick Gauldin followed with a base hit to left field to load the bases.

Joey Gonzalez then ripped a long single off the wall in left to plate a run before pinch-hitter Wesley Tom ended the game with a single to right.

Travis Mraz and Gauldin both went 2-for-5, Hamel finished the game 3-for-4 with two doubles and Gonzalez went 3-for-5 with two RBIs to lead the 49ers' 15-hit attack.

"It was a very good game and we played very well," Yuba coach Tim Gloyd said. "We played great defense — we didn't make an error. We pitched well and we got 15 hits."

Zack Vawter-Scoggin threw five shutout innings and allowed Yuba to go up 3-0 after the third inning, before Marin put four runs on the board in the sixth to take a narrow lead.

"He's been pitching very well lately. He only gave up two hard-hit balls today," Gloyd said. "It was his fifth straight strong outing."

Both teams scored a pair of runs in the eigth and Marin added one more in the ninth before Yuba's rally.

The 49ers improved to 18-21 overall and 12-12 in the Bay Valley Conference. Yuba will host Laney College at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

HOMELESS SHELTER?
Yuba City is considering using the former fire station No. 4 on Walton Avenue as a cold-weather shelter for homeless families. Is this a good idea?
Yes. We've gone too long with limited options for homeless families.
It's a good idea, but the fire station is a bad location for this.
No. The city has better things they can use the building for.
I'm not sure.
