Pheasant hunts slated for October
The Sutter and Yuba county Fish and Game Advisory Commissions will sponsor special pheasant hunts for novice junior hunters, junior mobility-impaired hunters and women hunters on Oct. 25-26.
The hunts, which have been offered since 1986, are held in cooperation with the California Department of Fish and Game and designed to give beginning hunters an introduction to the hunting experience. They will be staged at the Feather River Wildlife Area, Nelson Slough Unit. It is located south of Yuba City along the Feather River, under the Highway 99 bridge.
Pen-raised pheasants will be planted. There is no cost for the hunts; however, all hunters must have a valid hunting license. Overnight parking is permitted, with RVs welcome. Lunch is available. Dogs and dog handlers usually are provided.
In addition to the Yuba and Sutter county-sponsored hunts, the DFG will stage hunts on Nov. 1-2. A total of 400 hunters may be accommodated during the two weekends of the combined hunts. Applications for any of the hunts may be obtained online at http://dfg.ca.gov/wildlife/hunting/uplandgame/gamebird. For information, call 692-0709, 755-0847 or 892-8470.
