LITTLE LEAGUE: Local softball squads claim section crowns
First came the comeback. Now comes the trip to Arizona for the Marysville junior softball all-stars, which topped Cosumnes River 18-9 in Rancho Murieta on Saturday to win the section championship.
Down 8-6 entering the sixth inning, Marysville plated seven runs in the sixth and five more in the seventh to clinch the title. The win advances Marysville to Arizona to compete in regionals.
Kennedy Baker was 4 for 5 and Rachel McGrath went 3 for 4 to lead the way for Marysville. Tierra Glassgow and Anya Bell both finished 2 for 3 and pitcher Brandy Gilliam picked up the win.
SENIOR SOFTBALL
Peach Bowl 8, Redwood Empire 7
It's Big Sky Country or bust for the Peach Bowl all-stars.
Peach Bowl clinched the section championship by beating Redwood Empire on Friday night and earned a spot in the regional tournament, which will be held in Missoula, Mont.
With the score tied 7-7 on Friday night in Martinez, Ally Reece came through with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth inning to put Peach Bowl ahead.
Peach Bowl surrendered six runs over the first three innings before Jostyn Bebout came through a grand slam to cut the deficit.
Kelsey Smith knocked in two runs and Hannah Heitman was 2 for 4 with run scored.
MINOR SOFTBALL
Marysville 12, Gilroy 11
Hannah Clavelle went 3 for 3 with two RBIs and shut down the opposition over the final two innings from the circle to lift Marysville to a win in the sectional tournament in Pinole.
Sarina Gutierrez was 3 for 3 and Veda Smith hit an inside-the-park homer. Madison Powell added three RBIs and Josie Rapp batted in a run.
