Garner edges Rice for rodeo title
Comments 0 | Recommend 0The battle for the District 3 high school boys all-around championship between Josh Garner and Daniel Rice remains one of the best shows in rodeo.
Garner, of Live Oak, got the better of Rice, of Clements, in the most recent two-day event, capturing the top points with wins in steer wrestling, tie-down roping and team roping with partner Preston Vandeburgh of Cottonwood.
Garner also took a fourth in cutting to complete one of the most dominating efforts of the season.
Rice was the reserve champion at the rodeo held at the Lincoln Arena.
He won the cutting competition, was third in steer wrestling and finished fourth in team roping with partner John Seifert of Acampo.
The girls all-around champion was Nic Tsosie of Eureka. Haley Brum of Lockeford was second. Tsosie was second in goat tying, third in breakaway roping, fourth in cutting and finished third in team roping. Her partner is Brum. Natalie Holmberg-Douglans of Penn Valley was the top rookie.
Samantha Wallace of Wheatland won the goat-tying competition, and Eric Coppin of Pleasant Grove won the bareback riding.
Other event winners were Clarise Bankus of Alta in breakaway roping, Katie LaMaster of Somerset in pole bending, Jenna Colamartlno of Rocklin in barrel racing and Michael Diaz of Woodland in girls cutting.
In the rough stock events, Dillon Everts of Lincoln won the bull-riding competition, and Logan Naillon of greenwood won the saddle bronc.
Chant DeForest of Wheatland was third in cutting, fourth in steer wrestling and fourth in tie-down roping.
Other notables from the Yuba-Sutter area included Melissa Cooper of Yuba City (3rd, pole bending), Savannna Baker of Marysville (4th, breakaway roping), Holmberg-Douglans (4th, goat tying) and Chelsea Lance (5th, pole bending; 5th, barrells),
Clint Tipton of Marysville and his partner Austin Tyler of Lincoln were second in team roping, while Baker and Dillon Hushour of Fairfield were fifth.
KARATE
Burrell wins three medals
Christy Burrell of Yuba City took bronze medals in all three disciplines kata (forms), kummite (sparring) and kobudo (weapons) at the 14th annual Shotokan Karate USA West Coast Championships held Sunday at River Valley High School in Yuba City.
Peter Borja of Yuba City and Jeremy Pharris of Marysville each won golds in both forms and sparring.
Other gold medalists in forms were Joshua Camacho of Yuba City, Gurveer Dosanjh of Yuba City, Jessica Ekstrum of Yuba City, Grace Forbes of Yuba City, Jacob Groce of Loma Rica and Kevin Payne of Yuba City.
Other gold medalists for sparring were Arun Atwal of Yuba City, Davin Brar of Yuba City, Gehrigg Garcia of Live Oak, Steven Garcia of Live Oak and Devan Nath of Yuba City.

JUNIOR RODEO
Cox ties for all-around
Macey Cox of Arbuckle won the breakaway roping competition to share the all-around title with Kayla Nichol of Cottonwood at the District 1 junior high rodeo in Cottonwood over the weekend.
Cox also placed third in pole bending, fourth in goat tying and sixth in barrell racing.
