Local Roundup: 5 Mid-Valley ballplayers named to state

Cal-Hi Sports released its 2009 all-state softball and baseball teams recently and to no surprise, Yuba City High's Max Stassi and Sutter's Jessica Moore were both named to the first team.

Moore, who was the Small School Player of the Year, finished her senior season in dominant fashion. She went 34-0 to lead her team to a section title. She had 18 no-hitters, 504 strikeouts and an 0.17 ERA. Teammate Courtney Gravel was also named as an infielder to the small school team after posting huge offensive numbers as a sophomore.

Stassi, a catcher, batted .538 with 38 RBIs and 11 homers to lead the Honkers to a third straight section title. He went on to be drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the fourth round of MLB's First-Year Player Draft and is still undecided on whether he will sign or play at UCLA on a full-ride scholarship.

Stassi's brother Jake Stassi was named to the all-state underclassman second team for having another terrific season from the mound and with the bat.

East Nicolaus' Andrew Rubalcava was named small school first team for his ability to pitch, hit and his play behind the dish.
