Y.C. cross country runners advance

The Yuba City High cross country team competed against over 150 schools at the Sac-Joaquin Subsection meet in Angels Camp on Saturday.

Junior Jo an Fernandez took 14th place out of 173 runners on the 3.0-mile course with a time of 17 minutes and 9 seconds. Placing 14th qualifies him in Saturday's section meet in Folsom at the Willow Hills course.

As a team, the varsity boys placed 11th. Jose Guzman (52nd, 18:31), Greg Geraldo (59th, 18:45), Abraham Barajas (72nd, 19:09), Matt Bailey (97th, 19:59), Ryan Gardner (135th, 21:51), Kevin Lewis (154th, 22:19), and Jacob Purcell (29:14) also competed for the Honkers.

Sophomore Niyia Sims took 25th place (21:13) to lead the varsity girls team. Her performance qualifies her to be the 6th individual for the upcoming section meet. Senior Liliana Pinedo also ran for the Honkers and finished 122nd (26:37).

For the frosh-soph girls, Holly McAlister took 6th place (14:45) on the 2.0-mile course. Teammate Kelsey Mincer finished 9th (15:19). Both qualified to compete on Saturday.

For the frosh-soph boys, Shanahan Sarabia and Tanner McAlister were just 2 seconds apart to finish 34th and 35th (13:17, 13:19) respectively to lead their team. Both will compete. Marcos Gonzales (52nd, 14:18), Jacob Sanchez (72nd, 16:52), and Elliot Sanchez (74th, 17:40) also competed for the team.

YOUTH SOCCER

Azzurri Roadrunners win

The Azzurri Roadrunners under-10 boys soccer team defeated the El Dorado Hills Galaxy 2-1 on Saturday.

Roberto Tinoco and Cesar Barrera each scored a goal.

Braden Bancroft and Alejandro Barajas had an assist a piece.

The team won the Pumpkin Kick Classic last weekend after defeating he Rocklin Rush 7-0 in the championship game.
