Prep Roundup: Yuba City volleyball wins TCC opener

Tori Thomas tallied 12 assists and Gabi Hinz finished with 19 service points and three aces to help the Honkers to a victory over the Knighthawks in their Tri-County Conference opener.

Andrea Hazel had seven digs and six kills, Katie Reiland finished with seven kills and Connar Lopez had 11 service points, seven digs and three aces in the victory for Yuba City (4-7, 1-0).

Rosie Beck and Lunden Fletcher helped the Honkers' junior varsity team record 20 aces in a 25-12, 25-8 victory.

Capital Chr. 3, Marysville 1

Annie Lin finished with four assists, four kills, three digs and two aces but the Indians fell in the Golden Empire League contest on the road.

Marissa Clavelle had seven kills, four digs, a block and an ace and Cameo Stevens addede six digs, three kills and two aces in the loss for Marysville (4-10, 1-5).

The Indians' JV team lost 25-14, 26-14. Mackensey Pike had three kills and an ace, Holly Huber tallied two kills and a dig and Kalli Cano had four digs in the loss.

The Marysville freshman team won 25-17, 25-15. Elizabeth Bond had six digs and an ace, Gabbi Leatherman had five digs and an ace and Holly Tarr tallied three digs, two kills and two aces in the victory.

YCHS competes in Kelseyville

The Yuba City High cross country team competed at the Clam Beach Cross Country Invitational in McKinleyville with every member of the team recording their fastest times of the season.

In the varsity boys division, the Honkers were led by Jose Guzman, who took third place after finishing the 3.1-mile course in a time of 16 minutes, 36 seconds. Jo an Fernandez wasn't too far behind by taking fifth in 16:42.

The entire distance of the varsity and 2.0-mile junior varsity course were held entirely on a sandy beach. Both Guzman and Fernandez were award winners for the Honkers.

Other varsity runners for the Honkers were Abraham Barajas (17th, 17:43), Greg Geraldo (35th, 19:02), Arjun Bhungal (38th, 21:38) and Jacob Purcell (21:55, 39th).

In the varsity girls division, the Honkers were represented by Lilianna Pinedo (15th, 23:39), Angelina Aceves (16th, 23:45) and Stephanie Sarabia (17th, 24:18).

The Honkers' Matt Bailey was third in the junior varsity race with a time of 11:51 and right behind him was Ryan Gardner, who took fourth in 11:58. Tanner McAlister (9th, 12:26), Shanahan Sarabia (21st, 13:29), Marcus Gonzales (23rd, 13:43), Elliot Sanchez (27th, 16:15) and Jacob Sanchez (28th, 16:22) also ran well for Yuba City, which took second in the team scoring.

Bailey, Gardner and McAlister were each award winners.

In the junior varsity girls division, the Honkers' Niyia Sims was the overall race winner in 12:57. Holly McAlister followed her teammate across the finish line for a fifth-place finish in 14:02. Sims and McAlister were award winners.

Faith Christian takes third

The Faith Christian varsity boys cross country finished third out of seven teams at the Foresthill Wildfire Invitational. Cody Meredith led the team with a time of 20:17, while Aidan Greathouse was right behind him with a time of 22:04.

Hannah Baber finished 33rd with a time of 28.44 as the Lions' only varsity girls runner.
