The only local softball team to get in a game last week was the Maxwell Panthers, who traveled to Durham on Friday where they came up just short against the Trojans, falling 10-9 in a back and forth affair that wasn’t decided until the bottom of the seventh inning.

Junior Aubrie Keeler blasted two triples to finish 2 for 3 with an RBI while sophomore Laynee Haywood drove in three runs to lead the Panthers.

Also making a significant contribution was freshman leadoff hitter Paige Vierra who picked up a hit and scored three runs.

Senior Jasmine Atencio got the start in the circle striking out three and yielding just three earned runs before giving way to Vierra, who despite struggling with control, struck out nine in over the final four innings.

If the rain subsides, Maxwell (0-1) is set to begin play in Colusa’s Randy Watt Invitational Tournament on March 8 with a game against county rival Pierce at
