It was an inauspicious beginning for the Colusa RedHawk baseball team in their NSCIF Division III playoff game with U-Prep on May 14, as they yielded an unearned run even before getting the game’s first out.
Yet the No. 2 RedHawks minimized the damage then responded in the home half of the first inning with five runs of their own to down No. 3 U-Prep 5-2 and advance to the section title game for the first time in four years.
Senior Christian Lyss, who got the nod on the mound, set the tone as he worked out of a first inning jam recording a strikeout to end a bases loaded threat then, helped his cause driving in a run.
Two batters later, Leo Guzman followed up with a two-run inside the park home run to ignite the comeback as Colusa chased the Panthers’ starter after just a third of an inning.
Ultimately the RedHawks put a total of five runs on the board in the opening frame, their only runs of the game, but it proved to be more than enough as Lyss shutdown the Panthers until the final inning where they added a single run.
Lyss, who earned the complete game win on the mound, struck out 10 while scattering five hits.
Afterwards coach Eric Lay praised the right-hander’s performance saying, “He was great today. He pitched through the early error and didn’t let it rattle him.”
With the win, Colusa (23-7) was set to face No. 1 Winters in the section championship game last Saturday at Butte College, however rain forced the game to be moved to Winters on May 21.
