Last week was a quiet one around the county for baseball and softball teams with only the Colusa RedHawks’ softball team getting in some pre-playoff action as they faced off at home against Division IV rivals Orland and Sutter coming away with a 12-5 win over the Trojans before falling to the Huskies 6-2.
Against Orland on May 6, Jessica Hickel made the most of Senior Day going 3-for-3 at the plate and striking the big blow after launching a three run home run in the RedHawks’ seven run second inning.
Fellow senior Helena Harris came through with an RBI double while freshman Alexis Price ended 2-for-2 with a double and sophomore Emily Pingrey tripled.
However, it wasn’t so easy for Colusa when Sutter came to town on May 7.
Despite taking a two run lead in the first inning after back-to-back RBI hits by Lexi Hernandez and Makayla Frias, the Huskies shutout the RedHawks the rest of the way behind pitcher Hailey Peterson, who got stronger as the game progressed striking out eight Colusa batters.
Hernandez finished 2-4 with a double while Price, Harris and Gracie Myers recorded the only other hits.
The RedHawks (15-9) seeded No. 7 in the NSCIF Division IV playoffs traveled to Shasta Lake on Tuesday, March 14, to take on No. 10 Wheatland (9-10) in a first round game, with the winner playing directly afterward against No. 2 Central Valley (16-5-1).
