As track season draws to a close, local athletes convened at Yuba College last Friday for the Sacramento Valley League Championships and when the dust finally settled the Pierce varsity girls had claimed the league title in dominating fashion, while the Colusa varsity boys settled for third behind Winters and Live Oak.
Individually county participants captured 12 first place medals led by triple winners Pierce’s Sarah Vann and Colusa’s Conner Saso.
Vann won the 100 meters (13:42), the 100 meters hurdles (15:22), and the high jump (4-6) while Saso took the 110 and 300 meter hurdles in respective times of 17:40 and 44:04 along with the high jump (5-10).
Yet the Pierce girls had other notable first place finishes contributing to their victory including Ariantha Sanchez in the 800 meters (2:52.54) and 1600 meters (6:30.13), Carolina Garcia in the 3200 meters (15:53.90) and Anahi Villnueva in shot put (31-02).
Additionally, the Bears would sweep the relay events with the team of Montse Ambriz, Maria Rivera, Betsy Myers and Vann besting the field in the 4x100 (52:89) and repeat in the 4x400 behind the efforts of Sanchez, Navarro, Ambriz and Gissell Aceves (5:01.01).
Colusa would record two first place finishes among the varsity girls as America Montano won the 200 meters (29:24) and Sophie Stocks the discus with a season’s best toss of 88-01.
Top finishers will now return to Yuba College on Friday afternoon for the NSCIF Division III finals.
