Warning: Thefts increasing

The Colusa County Sheriff's Office is warning all citizens to increase vigilance against theft and burglary this holiday season.

According to a press release issued Monday, the office has noted a surge in theft- and burglary-related arrests and charges in the past month, a common occurrence this time of year.

Accordingly, the office is asking people to ensure their residences and vehicles are locked and urge them to keep equipment and other property in secure, well-lighted area.

For information or to report suspicious activity, call the sheriff's office at 458-0200 or the Colusa County Narcotics Enforcement Team at 458-0222.

Students win writing contest

Tanner Vierra, a third-grader at Maxwell Elementary, and Ysabel Charter, a fifth-grader at Arbuckle Elementary, were among the regional winners of the 2016 Imagine This ... writing contest, sponsored by the California Foundation for Agriculture in the Classroom.

The contest aims to help students develop their writing skills in crafting stories about real or imagined events relating to California agriculture.

Their awards will be mailed out in January. Additionally, their stories have been entered into the statewide contest; winners will be announced on Jan. 1 and will be published in the 2016 edition of "Imagine This ... Stories Inspired by Agriculture," which will debut on March 22 during California Agriculture Day in Sacramento.
