Once again in the early stages of the 2019 season Mother Nature trumped the softball gods as rain cut short Colusa’s Randy Watt Invitational Tournament.

Named for Colusa’s longtime former coach Randy Watt, this year’s event featured teams from Corning, Maxwell, Oroville, Pierce, Ripon, Willows and Winters, in addition to the host RedHawks.

While a full slate of pool play games were played on Friday, March 8, rain overnight and on Saturday morning resulted in the cancelation of the matchup rounds.

Still, the opportunity provided to get some time on the diamond was welcomed by the three local teams.

Here is a look at how the action played out last Friday:

Colusa RedHawks

Colusa 16, Oroville 1

Colusa 12, Winters 2

Colusa 11, Maxwell 1

After being rained out in the first two weeks of the season, the Colusa RedHawk softball team finally got on the field where they preceded to take out their frustrations on three opponents.

In their first game of the season, the RedHawks routed Oroville in four innings behind seniors Jessica Hickel and Dyanna Santana who both belted doubles and drove in a pair of runs to go along with a two RBI contribution from Helena Harris.

In the circle, Cynthia Velasquez and Annie Lay combined to strike out four over four innings.

Against Winters, Velasquez tossed a complete game striking three and got plenty of support at the plate as the RedHawks notched a double digit win over the Warriors.

Abby Huskey and newcomer Alexis Price both finished 2 for 3 with an RBI while Gracie Myers went 1 for 2 with two RBIs.

In a late impromptu game against county rival Maxwell, the RedHawks took advantage of seven errors to put away the Panthers.

Harris picked up two hits and an RBI while Huskey and Hickel accounted for Colusa’s only other hits.

Santana and Lay combined to limit Maxwell to just a single run.

This week the RedHawks (3-0) hosted Wheatland Tuesday and face off against Gridley today at home.

Pierce Bears

Ripon 16, Pierce 1

Willows 14, Pierce 12

Pierce 11, Maxwell 3

A young Bears team that includes just one senior and 10 underclassmen picked up their first win of the season and gained some valuable experience in their three games in Colusa.

Pierce got a tough opening round draw in defending tournament champion Ripon, a San Joaquin Section team that has a school enrollment of nearly 900 students.

Freshman Gicelle Condrey smacked a double while Sofia Martinez, Betsy Myers and Abby Mendoza collected the only other hits against the Indians.

In their second game, against Willows, the Bears staged a furious rally in the bottom of the fifth inning plating nine runs, but ultimately fell just short.

Emily Ehrke hit two doubles to lead Pierce, who also saw Noemi Martinez and Kylie Stephens hit doubles and Katlyn Nickell pick up a pair of hits.

Pierce closed out the day with a win over county rival Maxwell behind a big game from Condrey who went 3 for 4 with two RBI.

Also helping the cause was Ehrke going 3 for 4 with a double and Martinez, who drove in two with her second double of the day.

Grace Alonso and Stephens each finished 2 for 4.

Pierce (1-3) played Williams at home on Monday and was on the road in Hamilton City Tuesday ahead of opening play at Gridley’s Varsity Tournament on Friday.

Maxwell Panthers

Pierce 11, Maxwell 3

Colusa 11, Maxwell 1

Scheduled for two of their three pool play games on Saturday, Maxwell, the only Division VI team in the tournament, wound up instead with a twilight doubleheader which included a matchup with Pierce before an unplanned contest against the RedHawks.

Against the Bears, Laynee Haywood delivered an RBI double while Abby Dunlap and Morgan Dennis each drove in a run.

Paige Vierra, Theresa Mitchum, Elena Pimienta and Iaisha Izquierdo also got hits for the Panthers.

Maxwell kept no statistics in their late game with Colusa.

Now winless in three tries this season, the Panthers look to turn things around as they return home this week for a scheduled match with Mercy on Tuesday before opening their own tournament on Thursday.
