Youth Achievements: 60 FFA exhibitors show off talents at Yuba-Sutter Fair

This year at the 160th Yuba Sutter Fair, all 60 Sutter FFA exhibitors did an outstanding job showing and selling their Market and Breeding animals, along with the members who chose to take Ag Mechanics projects. With over 450 lots sold, the Yuba-Sutter Fair exhibitors made a record breaking profit of over $1 million.

50th Anniversary: Ritchey

Jerald Ritchey and Nancy Harris married Aug. 10, 1968, at Grace Methodist Church, Yuba City. They met while attending Yuba City Union High School. Jerald served in the USMC and attended Yuba College while Nancy attended Sacramento City College and St. Luke’s nursing school in San Francisco before they were married. Jerald later graduated from Sacramento State College and attended UC Davis.

Cory Walker, 12 years old from Team Coon Creek in Rio Oso, recently competed in the United States Youth Clay Shooting Competition in Las Vegas. Cory placed in all three disciplines. In Skeet, he took third place and his squad, consisting of Audric Scheidel, Cole Kennedy and Cory, took the national championship. In Sporting Clays, Cory took second place and his squad took second place as well. For Trap, Cory was the National Champion for the Intermediate Entry age group and his squad, consisting of Cory Walker, Ethan Whiteaker, Ilse Scheidel, Lilly Holland and Gavin Damron, took third place.

Youth Achievements: Sutter Rifle Team wins several awards at NRA Sectionals Competition

Earlier this year, the Sutter Union High School Rifle Team competed in National Rifle Association sectionals in both Junior and open divisions. The junior division is comprised of competitors under 21 years of age, and the open division is for any age group. Yearly, the NRA conducts these matches nationwide as postal matches. Teams compete locally and the scores are combined nationally.

50th Anniversary: Halsted

James and Brenda Halsted, of Olivehurst, married  July 6, 1968, in Reno, Nevada.  James was born in Bear Creek, Arkansas and moved to Yuba County as a young child. Brenda was born in Redding and she also moved to Yuba County when she was young. James and Brenda met in 1966 while out cruising in Marysville and they knew they were meant to be together.  James was a dedicated truck driver all his life and retired from the teamster in 1997. Brenda was a waitress and retired in 1995. They have five children: Rhonda, Kevin, Tammy, Chris and Jay. They have twelve grandchildren and five great grandchildren. During their lives together they have enjoyed camping with their family and riding dirt bikes.

Yuba City residents Sarah Skinner and Sy Honig were married Dec. 2, 2017 at St. Isidore Catholic Church in Yuba City. Sarah is the daughter of Graham and Laura Skinner of Chico. The Maid of Honor was the bride’s sister, Jennifer Rothenwander, of Burbank. Her other attendants were Allie Honig, Melissa Withrow, and Taylor Jackson. The groom, son of Kevin and Marcella Honig of Yuba City, had Hayden Sampley of Live Oak as Best Man. His other attendants were Michael Bradshaw, Michael Bardford, and Jon Phillips. The couple honeymooned in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.

Garden Club awards scholarship to Marysville High School student

The Sutter Buttes Garden Club held its installation of officers on June 24 at the Harvest Room, Hillcrest Plaza.  A scholarship for $1,000 was presented to Kaitlyn O’Dell, a 2018 graduate of Marysville High School, by Kathy Covert, Education and Scholarship Chair of the club.     Kaitlyn will be attending college at CSU Humboldt majoring in forestry/conservation. She was active in FFA and was on varsity swim team while attending Marysville High School.  Kaitlyn is the daughter of Randy and Julie O’Dell of Browns Valley.

Raymond and Betty Lopez of Wheatland celebrated 60 years of marriage with family and friends on Saturday. They were married in Albuquerque, New Mexico July 7, 1958. Before moving to Wheatland they resided in Las Vegas, Beale Air Force Base,  England and the Philippines. 

90th Birthday: Anne Batchelor

Anne Batchelor celebrated her 90th birthday with a barbecue hosted by her daughters Susan and Sandy, at the home of her daughter Sandy and her husband Ralph Heryford, where she now lives. Her sister Marilyn, daughter in law Katie, grandchildren, and great grandchildren are were there to help here celebrate. She was born in Grand Junction, Colorado, on July 2, 1928, to Harold and Jean Campbell. She was the middle child of eleven.  Anne was married to Richard Batchelor for 65 years. She lost her husband and both of her sons, Clyde and Robert, in the past four years. She enjoys watching the wildlife from the deck of her new home and going to the casino once in awhile. Her big passion is watching sports on TV.  Go Giants!

Athletes compete at local Special Olympics competition

The Northern California Special Olympics had their annual Summer Games at UC Davis this past week-end of June 22-24.  This year’s event celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Special Olympics, which had their first event in Soldier Field In Chicago  July of 1968.  The Yuba/Sutter Special Olympics sent 33 athletes, 11 coaches and Head of Delegation James (Bo) Patton to participate in this year’s event.  It was the largest delegation of athletes and coaches ever sent from this area.  There were 13 track and field athletes, eight swimming athletes and three bocce teams of four athletes each.  The Bocce teams ended up getting a gold medal, bronze medal and a fourth-place finish.  

50th Wedding Anniversary: Robert and Maria

Robert “Andybob” Anderson and Maria Orlando celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a cruise along the Alaskan Coast along with a gathering of family members. Robert and Maria were married at Saint Isadore’s Catholic Church in Yuba City two weeks after Maria’s 1968 graduation.  Maria and Bob raised three sons Daniel, Richard and Andrew, Daniel, and Sheena his fiance. Richard and his daughter Jillie live in Missoula, Montana.  Andrew lives in Marysville with his wife Kim and their son Robert, and daughters Gwen and Abby. 

50th Wedding Anniversary: Ralph and Sandy

Ralph and Sandy Heryford. Married June 15, 1968, in Carson City, Nevada. They live in Tierra Buena. Ralph was born and raised in Yuba City and met Sandy while working in Sacramento. Sandy was born in Ogden, Utah and moved to Sacramento as a child. They have lived in Yuba City all their married life.  Ralph is a barber and the owner of the Tierra Buena Barber Shop, and Sandy retired seven years ago. She was a cosmetologist and owned The Look Styling Salon.  They also farm walnuts. They have three sons, Hunter, Raith, and Wes. And they have nine grandchildren who are the loves of their life. They celebrated their 50th anniversary in Pismo beach with family and friends and also attended their oldest grandson’s graduation from Cal Poly, and Father’s Day. A very happy and exciting weekend.

Melissa Mae Meagher has been awarded her doctor of psychology (Psy.D) in marriage and family therapy by Alliant International University which also awarded her masters degree in that field in 2010. She received her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Cal-Poly San Luis Obispo in 2006 and she is a 2002 graduate of Yuba City High School. Dr. Meagher is certified in infant preschool mental health and is continuing her practice as a licensed marriage and family therapist working primarily with the youth of the Sutter / Yuba community.

Fetters beat out 37 other grant applicants.

We are pleased to announce that May 30 at the Marysville High School Gymnasium the Winner of the second annual Marysville-Peikang Sister City Scholarship Award went to Carla Oliveras Cortes, a sophomore attending Marysville High School and who just graduated at Yuba College with two degrees and is planning on attending Yuba College for another year as she continues in the Medical field.
