A Corning woman suffered minor injuries when she was involved in a five-vehicle crash on Highway 99E near Tecate Road on Dec. 13. According to the California Highway Patrol, Darren Kelly, 25, of British Columbia was driving a 2013 International three-axel truck south on the highway in the left lane when he struck a southbound Nissan Altima around 7:48 a.m., as he moved into the right lane.
The initial collision caused the Nissan, driven by Megann D. Pitts, 33, of Chico to slide sideways in front of the International and across the roadway into the northbound lanes where she collided with a 2017 Freightliner big-rig driven by Stacy Ward, 46, of Redding, CHP said.
The Nissan was pushed back into the southbound lanes where it was struck by a 2000 Honda Accord, driven by Patricia Dee White, 54, of Corning, CHP reported. When the right front wheel of the Nissan came off the car during the series of collisions, it struck a 2013 Hyundai Sonata, driven by Vere Walnter Heard, 53, of Red Bluff.
A 6-year-old girl in the Nissan suffered major injuries, including a broken pelvis, broken leg and laceration to her head. She was transported by medical helicopter to Enloe Medical Center in Chico, and later transported by medical helicopter to UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento for treatment of her injuries.
Pitts and White, both suffering minor injuries, were transported to Enloe Medical Center, treated and released.
CHP said it does not appear alcohol or drugs were a factor in the collision.
