As the girls basketball season reaches it’s midway point, the Willows Honkers are rolling through the Sacramento Valley League and preparing to defend the Northern Section title they won a season ago.

Junior Meghan Weinrich, a threat from both the inside and the perimeter, is again heading the charge averaging 22.4 points a game, which is good for second in the section, just three-tenths behind Enterprise’s Jayden Matthews who leads with 22.7 points per game.

Yet, the Honkers have an athletic and experienced supporting cast, which includes seniors Claire Maghan and Marissa Peters in addition to juniors Tayler Berens and Hanna Parisio, making them a tough match up for any opponent.

Willows began last week blowing by the visiting Colusa RedHawks 67-33 behind 25 points from Weinrich, 15 points from Berens and 12 from Maghan, then followed up by downing the Pierce Bears 56-32.

Statistics from the Pierce game were not available by the Glenn County Transcript’s print deadline.

Willows (15-5, 4-0) hosted winless Winters (0-20) on Tuesday and meets Pierce (4-16) tonight.
