For the second year in a row the Willows boy’s soccer team saw their season come to an end in a NSCIF Division III playoff game at home.

While last season the Honkers fell to eventual champion Williams, this time the visiting No. 5 Colusa RedHawks scored a goal in the 64th minute to upset the No.4 Honkers 2-1 in a hard fought contest last Saturday.

While sloppy conditions on the pitch hampered both teams, early on it seemed as though the Honkers were going to have an advantage as they dominated play in the opening minutes.

However, it was the RedHawks striking first, after a shot deflected off a Willows defender past the dive of goalkeeper Brandon Rodriguez.

Yet the Honkers kept up the pressure and after Odell Calzada was awarded a penalty kick after being taken down in the box during a run, leading scorer Sergio Gonzalez calmly drilled the attempt to tie the score at 1-1 in the 32 nd minute.

As the field continued to deteriorate in the second half, Rodriguez kept the Honkers even making a save on a Colusa penalty kick in the 52nd minute with another headlong dive.

Unfortunately for Rodriguez and his teammates, the RedHawks would eventually capitalize in the 64th minute on a follow up that had bounced off the crossbar for the game winner.

While the Honkers did mount a furious charge in the time remaining, they could not break through against the Colusa defense.

Gonzalez, who played his last game for the purple and gold, ends the season as the second leading scorer in the Northern Section and is among six graduating seniors on the squad.

Willows (13-9-4) will look to retool next year led by Rodriguez, their battle tested keeper who returns for his final season.
