Despite a fierce effort, the Willows volleyball team saw their season come to an end last Thursday night as they fell 18-25, 24-26, 25-12, 21-25 to the visiting No. 5 seeded Colusa RedHawks in the second round of the NSCIF Division IV playoffs.

As the Sacramento Valley League champions, the Honkers received the No. 4 seed and a first round bye, but were also put on a collision course with the RedHawks, the only SVL team to beat them this season.

Willows had evened the season series between the two teams on October 16, when by defeating Colusa laid claim to the SVL title, so in the rubber match, the RedHawks definitely had something to prove, and did just that by taking the first two sets.

Yet the Honkers did not go down without a fight and flexed their muscles in the third set to blow out the RedHawks.

However, it was not meant to be as in the fourth set, Colusa pulled away from a 21-21 tie to score the match’s final four points.

Junior Meghan Weinrich turned in a stellar performance, finishing with 15 kills and nine blocks.

Seniors Taylor O’Reilly and Claire Maghan in their last game for the Honkers each recorded double doubles as O’Reilly distributed 27 assists and made 10 digs while Maghan finished with 12 kills and 11 digs.

Willows concluded its season with a 23-14 overall record.
