Hundreds of people are expected to attend this weekend’s 2017 California State Duck Calling Championship and Outdoor Expo in Colusa featuring contestants demonstrating their talent, plus waterfowl and community vendors.
Registration for competitors starts at 8 a.m. Saturday and Sunday at Colusa Veterans Memorial Park at 10th and Market streets.
General admission is free.
“You have to be an odd duck to be interested in listening” to the sounds at the competition, said Pat Kittle, co-owner of Kittle’s Outdoor and Sport Co. in Colusa.
This is the local business’ seventh year hosting the event.
But people can experience something new if they’re not into hunting or duck calling at the family-friendly event, he said.
The judged event also includes the Butte Sink Regional Championship, previously hosted by the California Waterfowl Association, on Saturday.
Winners in both contests compete at the World’s Championship Duck Contest in November at Stuttgart, Ark.
Guests attending include California professional callers Bret Crowe, a three-time world champion caller, and Ben Williams; Jim Ronquest, World Champion caller and host of RNT TV; and Keith Allen of the Outdoor Channel’s “Banded Nation.”
Activities include art displays, antique decoys, children’s activities and an appearance by the makers of Iverson Duck Calls.
Organizers said that, in the competition, participants show how well they can blow a call as if it were a musical instrument.
