The Olivehurst-Linda Little League Girls Majors Softball team had quite a season and will be celebrated for their efforts during a parade in Olivehurst on Sunday.
The 12-girl squad, led by manager Dan Martin and two coaches, made it all the way to West Regional Final in San Bernardino.
“I started coaching these girls last year when they were mostly 11 years old and we made it one game away from going to San Bernardino and they wanted to go for it again this year,” Martin said. “Eight girls came back from last year and they went undefeated throughout the year.”
Olivehurst-Linda not only advanced to San Bernardino, it was one game – and perhaps one rally short – of winning the West Regional title and advancing to the Little League Softball World Series in Portland. In the end, Olivehurst-Linda fell 2-1 to Honolulu, Hawaii, ending its run one game short.
“I think that’ll drive them to work hard next year to reach the pinnacle – the World Series,” he said. “What kid doesn’t want to be on ESPN and hearing how the community was able to turn on the TV and watch the girls play was amazing.”
He said the fact that the community embraced the team’s journey was encouraging.
“The community wrapped their arms around these girls and all the younger girls can look up to them and what they accomplished,” he said.
The Olivehurst Softball Homecoming Parade is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 18 and between 2:30 p.m.-4:30 p.m., there will be road closures.
The parade starts near the Rite Aid at Olivehurst and Fifth avenues and makes its way south to Eleventh Avenue where it will turn left and continue to Yuba Gardens School.
An awards ceremony will take place at Yuba Gardens School following the parade.
