Modifications were made to construction plans for an upcoming phase of the Marysville Ring Levee project. Local, state and federal agencies in charge of the work scheduled a meeting later this month to update the public and gather comments.

The Marysville Levee Commission, the Central Valley Flood Protection Board and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are proposing changes to their original plans for an area located along the existing levee to the southwest of Marysville, between the Fifth Street Bridge and E Street Bridge.

Concerns about under-seepage, through-seepage and embankment stability were identified after the original plans were submitted in 2010, so an updated environmental document was needed to include those technical issues and options to fix it.

The most recent changes split up Phase 2 of the project into four different parts. As part of the sub-divided Phase 2, two sections (2A-South and 2C) will receive a seepage cutoff wall, and one will also see a portion of the waterside levee slope embankment stripped and resurfaced with an impervious fill. Neither Phase 2A-North and 2B were included in updated environmental documents.

The public hearing is scheduled for Feb. 28 from 4 p.m.-7 p.m. at the Yuba County Government Center – 915 Eighth Street, Marysville.

John Nicoletti, a Marysville Levee commissioner, said the public hearing will allow residents to weigh in on the proposed changes. He said officials are hoping to begin construction in 2019.

“With this phase, we will reach the halfway mark for the project,” Nicoletti said.

Those who cannot make the meeting but want to submit a comment can do so in writing until March 18. Written comments must be submitted to: David Moldoff, Department of Water Resources – 3464 El Camino Avenue Room 150, Sacramento, CA, 95821. Moldoff can also be reached at david.moldoff@water.ca.gov or by phone at (916) 480-5412.

After the public comment period, the Central Valley Flood Protection Board will decide whether to approve or deny the proposed changes to the project at a meeting on April 27 in Sacramento.
