Black smoke plumed from April Lane Elementary in Yuba City on Thursday evening, prompting a quick response from the fire department.
The department was called out at about 6:25 p.m. arriving three minutes later. Three engines and one battalion chief made up nine people on scene.
The smoke came from electronic waste on pallets outside the school's computer lab (in the center of campus), said Bill Fuller, Yuba City Fire Department's public information officer.
The pallets were underneath a covered walkway adjacent to classrooms, resulting in minor damage to the overhang. The heat also caused a window to break.
Representatives from the school arrived to secure the facility and deal with the light exterior damage. The fire department was only on scene for about 40 minutes, Fuller said.
Though there were children on one of the playgrounds (the school has one on the east and west side with the gates left open for community access; Fuller said the report did not clarify which one), no one was at the scene of the fire, and no one was injured.
Fuller said the cause of the fire is under investigation.
