Cambridge Junior College was honored as the 2017 Business Partner of the Year Friday night at the Yuba-Sutter Chamber of Commerce 33rd Annual Awards Gala, one of several awards presented during the celebration at Colusa Casino Resort.
The college, first established in Sutter County, was founded in 1999.
Over the years the college has trained more than 3,000 students in medical assisting, accounting, and medical office receptionists, according to a news release.
Its students and staff volunteer throughout the community and Chief Executive Officer Dan Flores has been the chairman of the board for the Yuba-Sutter Chamber of Commerce, the Yuba Sutter Economic Development Corporation and Sutter North Medical Foundation, as well as serving as a Sutter County supervisor.
Additional 2017 awards included:
– Outstanding Achievement Award, Non-profit: Yuba-Sutter Stand for the Silent. Part of the national Stand for the Silent, it helps victims of bullying. The local chapter began in 2015 and has expanded its service area to Colusa.
– New business: Grange Co-op. Committed to the agricultural community, it opened its first California location in Yuba-Sutter in 2017. The California location is the Oregon-based business’ ninth store.
– Small business: Shaw & Associates. In the community since 1954, the firm, offering tax service, financial advice, accounting and wealth management, is active in the community. It has served as a drop-off location for toy drives and canned food drives, and contributes to local charities, events and schools.
– Mid-size business: Cleanrite Buildrite. In business for more than 50 years, it provides cleaning, restoration and reconstruction services in an environmentally friendly manner. It helped clean up the river bottoms, working with local government, law enforcement and the homeless.
– Large business: Comfort Keepers. It provides in-home care for seniors and other adults needing assistance. In 2017 it added new technology, GradPad, a tablet for seniors to connect with family, friends and caregivers.
– Athena Award: Neena Gill, academic counselor and professor at Yuba College. She started at the school in 1990 and is the founding adviser for the Punjabi Club, is adviser for a program assisting young or unwed mothers, and is a founding member of Dusty’s Pantry that was created as a result of the Oroville Dam evacuation. In addition, the Yuba College Spirit Award was developed, with her as its first recipient.
Gill served on the Friday Night Live board for six years. She raised more than $66,000 for a 3D Toma Imaging machine at Sutter Health in Yuba City to detect cancer after she was diagnosed with cancer.
– Norma Crenshaw Award-Ambassador of the Year: Maria Ball, founding member of the chamber’s Ambassador group.
– Dottie Neubauer Award-Volunteer of the Year: Russell Hogue.
– Milestone Award winners: 25 years – Calpine and Sam’s Club.
Longest standing chamber member – Rose Insurance, 76 years.
Century Award-100 years of business – Sunsweet Growers.
