A batch of marijuana brownies distributed at River Valley High School sent one student to the hospital and another to jail, Yuba City police said Saturday.
Saira Munoz, a River Valley senior, "employed" at least one younger student to sell the black-market baked goods to other students, police said.
Munoz, 18, was booked into the Sutter County Jail on Fridday on suspicion of employing a minor to sell marijuana, a felony. She was still in custody Saturday night. Bail was set at $25,000.
"A (faculty member) stumbled upon a juvenile who was acting strangely and learned that student had consumed a marijuana-laced brownie," Sgt. Brian Bernardis said.
The student, whose age was not available, was treated at Rideout Memorial Hospital, but only as a precaution, Bernardis said.
A 15-year-old male student was cited on suspicion of marijuana transportation, a misdemeanor, and released to his family, police said.
A man who answered a phone listed as a contact number for Munoz on Saturday claimed he didn't know her.
Bernardis said other arrests are possible as the investigation continues.
It remains unclear how large the suspected distribution circle may have been, how long it was under way or how many students may have been involved. However, investigators said early indications point to only a small of students.
"It appears this was someone just making money off her peers," Bernardis said.
Bernardis said police are still trying to determine Munoz's marijuana source.
Additional charges against Munoz may be forthcoming. If convicted on the single allegation, Munoz could face between three and five years in custody, according the California Health and Safety Code.
