In what proved to be a defensive battle for both teams Friday night at Colusa Casino Stadium, the Yuba-Sutter Gold Sox secured a victory over the Reno Rams by a final score of 4-2.
The Gold Sox got off to a hot start in the first inning after team leading slugger, Tyler Carpenter, hit a two-run home run blast to give his ball club a 2-0 lead.
“One of the team dads last night told me to not pull off the ball so I reminded myself of that heading into today,” Carpenter said. “It’s been a long week for us so it’s good to see we just keep battling away.”
Carpenter’s first inning home run was his sixth knock on the season thus far.
“The kid (Carpenter) is seeing the ball like it’s a beach ball right now man,” manager Michael Frantz said. “He had another line drive tonight that nearly took off the first baseman’s glove. I love it.”
After Yuba-Sutter’s Kenny LeBeau hit an RBI single to bring in Billy Ralston from third, the Gold Sox took a 3-0 lead heading into the top of the third inning.
That’s when the Rams finally got their bats heated up. Reno would cross two runners in the top of the third inning off of multiple RBI singles. Luckily for Yuba-Sutter, Kellen Brothers settled down and got a strikeout and a ground out to avoid the jam and maintain the lead for the Gold Sox.
“I had to just sort of calm myself down there and pitch with more confidence and then things worked themselves out. I know I have a lot of help behind me,” Brothers said. “I owe a lot of my credit to them (defense).”
Down the stretch in the middle innings both opposing pitchers traded goose eggs on the scoreboard until the Gold Sox crossed another runner over the plate in the bottom of the sixth inning when Collin Wilson rounded third base and came home off of an RBI single by Sergio Rey.
In the final three innings Yuba-Sutter would call on it’s clutch pitching from the pen to shut down any chances of a rally by Reno. After Ryan Ahern came into the game in the ninth to grab two quick outs and tally the save, the Gold Sox took the game by a final score of 4-2.
Yuba-Sutter will be back in action tonight for the series finale against Reno at Colusa Casino Stadium in Marysville. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
