In a battle for local bragging rights, Marysville High's boys basketball team had all of the answers on Thursday night.
Cornell Greenwood continued his stellar play with 20 points, six rebounds and four assists, and the Indians kept their perfect record intact with a 66-58 victory over Yuba City at Lesta Joubert Gymnasium in Marysville.
Marysville led 18-13 at the end of the first quarter and took a four-point lead at the half before breaking the game open by outscoring the Honkers 18-9 in the pivotal third period.
Kaden Klein added a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds, and added five assists and three steals for good measure. Leo Mendoza scored 10 points and Kevin Scheive pulled down 14 rebounds.
"It was the best defensive performance I've seen all year," said Marysville coach Stan Easter.
The Indians improved to 12-0 on the year with the win and will play at the Lindhurst Blazer Holiday Classic starting on Wednesday against Mira Loma.
L.J. Smith scored a team-high 19 points, Landon Floyd added 17 and Elliot McAlister finished with 12 to lead the way for Yuba City (7-4), which will travel to play at the Fairfield Tournament on Wednesday with a first-round game against Vanden.
Yuba City picked up a 68-59 win in the junior varsity game. Bryce Rogers scored 22 points and Illyaas Rafiq had 19 to lead the Honkers (8-4).
Azhar Bath and Quintin Hall scored 17 points each, and Kameron Klein recorded a double-double with 16 points and 18 rebounds to pace the Indians(6-7).
In the freshman contest, Jagir Johal hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to lift Marysville to a 54-51 victory. Johal had a double-double with 18 points, 13 rebounds and seven steals, Eddie Gomez scored 14 points, Rex Rollins chipped in 12 and Kameron Ferguson came down with 14 rebounds for the Indians (9-3).
Shan Sanghera finished with 19 points, Rajan Dhanda had 13 and Elijah Stencil scored 10 to lead the Honkers (1-9).
River Valley 60, Elk Grove 47
In Yuba City — The Falcons overcame an early deficit and used an 11-0 run in the fourth quarter to pull away for the nonleague win over the Thundering Herd at Falcon Gymnasium.
Nick Barnes scored a team-high 16 points to go with four rebounds to lead the Falcons. Charnpreet Bansal had 10 points, 10 rebounds and five rebounds, and Eric Mellet compiled 15 points and 14 rebounds for River Valley (8-6), which will be on a holiday break until resuming play on Jan. 3.
The Falcons' junior varsity team picked up a 62-51 win over Elk Grove. Sahib Sharma led the way with 19 points, and Micah Tomm and Dante Montgomery each finished with nine for River Valley (10-4).
