A ceremony was held Thursday at the Veterans Memorial Building in Yuba City for the naming of a section of Highway 99 for the late Joan Bechtel, a former county supervisor and clerk-recorder.
Signs for the Joan B. Bechtel Memorial Highway were unveiled recently on 99 just south of the Highway 113 junction. As a member of the Board of Supervisors, Bechtel vigorously lobbied for the widening of 99 from Sacramento to Yuba City.
Bechtel served as a supervisor from 1993 to 2002. She served as clerk-recorder until the end of 2007 and died in 2008 at age 69 of natural causes.
Then-Assemblyman Doug LaMalfa introduced a resolution naming the Tudor Bypass section of the widening project in Bechtel's memory. Under state law, memorial highway signs are paid for by friends and family members of the person being honored.
